People often ask how NEON came into being?
Early laboratory experiments actually stumbled by accident onto what we now know as “NEON LIGHTING” . Glass vessels evacuated to high vacuum, were partially filled with an inert gas (still under vacuum) - helium, argon, neon, krypton, or zenon. When high voltage passed thru the gas, it produced LIGHT!
The commercial possibilities were endless, as glass tubing could be blown in various shapes as well as lettering for signs.
In 1910, Georges Claude, from Paris, France, demonstrated his first commercial luminous tube at the Grand Palais in Paris.
People were mesmerized by the colorful glow!
In 1923, the first NEON SIGN in America was at a PACKARD DEALERSHIP in Los Angeles, California. The name PACKARD was in capital letters - emitting a bright blue light.
People had never seen anything like this before, as signs had been limited to incandescent light bulbs up until that time. They lined up for five city blocks around this Packard Dealership to see this ALL NEW PHENOMENON called “LIQUID FIRE” !
